This is how Thomas Edison used to motivate his staff, by suggesting that whatever they were working on, there is a better way to do things and it is incumbent upon them to find it. This philosophy is how his teams were able to achieve so much and eventually apply for US patent 223,898 (granted on January 27, 1880) for an electric lamp using “a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires”. It was an evolution of older ideas, not anything new.
Alessandro Volta demonstrated the glowing wire known as the ‘Voltaic Pile’ in 1800, and other types of lights were coming to fruition, but Edison believed that there was a better way, and used materials such as carbonised bamboo for filament. He dreamed of lighting so cheap and so efficient that “only the rich would still use candles”. He persisted in finding a better way.
